The Good Citizen VR Experience

Overview

This project aims to use VR to address knowledge gaps in emergency response and the bystander effect, two barriers to responding to emergency medical situations.
The six medical situations are chosen as they are leading medical issues in society today. Our first scenario will address the detection of mental health issues as this is a foremost concern amongst our students. We have linked up with Ms Ong Poh Suan and her team from the NUS Office of Students Affairs (OSA), and Mr Alan Soong, a Resident Fellow from Prince George’s Park House (PGP House) andthrough our discussion, we understand there are many potential uses of our project in educating and changing the mindsets of students’ leaders and students in NUS.
For the second scenario, we decided on the case of OHCA. This is a life-threatening condition where bystander CPR increases survival rates by two to three times. (B.S.H, 2011). Our third scenario involves accidents. Accidents occur in everyday life and it is shown that bystander assistance and first aid save lives (Oliver GJ, 2017). We will also include other emergencies where bystander involvement is crucial like choking, seizures and severe allergic reactions.
The VR ILE will be on the NUS MOOC platform to allow the project to reach all NUS students and staff. There will also be a ‘magic window’ version where the whole experience is rendered on video for the project to expand its reach to the Singapore public.
